Where Memory and Craft Come Together

KHOKI returned to the runway on Friday, September 4, for its third show, and its first in roughly a year and a half, during Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2027 S/S, with support from Rakuten's by R project.

Inside the vast Terrada Warehouse, the brand created a set inspired by director Koki Abe's family home in Yamanashi, inviting guests to step into KHOKI's inner world. The objects placed throughout the entrance hall, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and other spaces were not chosen simply because they were valuable or expensive. Rather, they were carefully selected from KHOKI’s unique perspective as objects that have been kept because they hold personal memories and a sense of attachment for someone. Different objects coexist within a single space, with small discoveries hidden throughout. Together, they evoke a “home” built up from layers of someone’s memories and emotional attachments.

The space was filled with antique furniture, vintage objects, everyday goods, books, plants, records, and more, with SANDS FURNITURE, who has a close relationship with KHOKI, handling the prop styling. They also brought in personal belongings from Abe’s family home. With the support of “by R,” the large-scale set made it possible to create a more expansive environment. Unraveling memories of the past while layering them with perspectives that could only emerge from who Abe and the team are today, the show reflected a world that was more personal than ever before.

The collection expanded on the Spring/Summer 2027 lineup first presented in June, incorporating additional pieces created specifically for the runway. Feminine elements such as frills and floral patterns were incorporated into menswear, presenting a new balance that made these elements work within menswear.

In addition to KHOKI’s signature embroidered and patchwork jackets, the lineup included Napoleon jacket and corset‑inspired details drawn from the vintage stage costumes the team collects, as well as a bodysuit featuring a digitally rendered pattern based on American quilts. Throughout the show, nostalgic references were reframed through a contemporary sensibility. The show also hinted at new directions for womenswear, incorporating skirts and long dresses into the styling as KHOKI explored these categories in a more considered way for the first time.

Speaking about the collaboration with by R, Abe expressed hope that the partnership would help KHOKI reach new audiences. “By creating this show together, I feel that through the live streaming of the show and by showcasing our collection on Rakuten Fashion, our work can begin to reach people we haven’t been able to reach before. I’m looking forward to seeing what possibilities that opens up,” he said.

Guests including Tsubasa Honda, Fūju Kamio, Daisuke Shiba(Moguraider), UTA, Gliiico, Keisuke Asano, and Taishi Suzuki attended the show, experiencing the collection within the immersive world KHOKI created. Limited-edition pieces from by R appeared among the guests. UTA wore a shirt featuring a castle motif rendered in print and appliqué, while Daisuke Shiba paired a vintage-button graphic T-shirt with a tote bag adorned with fish-patterned patchwork.

Drawing together different cultures, eras, materials, and forms of craftsmanship, KHOKI has long reworked elements of the past through a contemporary lens. The brand’s third runway show captured where KHOKI stands today while hinting at what might come next.

KHOKI 27SS RUNWAY COLLECTION NOTE

When did I first experience “design”?

Tracing the origins of that feeling brings back the landscape of a childhood home. By the windows, antiques, toys, and seemingly insignificant objects gathered from distant travels existed side by side, without hierarchy or distinction.

The arrangement became something to imitate—a quiet invitation to collect, arrange, and combine the things within reach.

There were no clear rules, nor any predetermined meaning.
And yet, an order existed—one that belonged only to its maker, with small surprises quietly hidden in unexpected places.
