KHOKI is a fashion brand run by an anonymous design team. Rather than telling the story of any individual, it lets the clothes speak for themselves. Inspired by the thrill of a flea market, KHOKI effortlessly weaves together East and West, memory and imagination, creating playful, humorous clothing grounded in everyday life. The brand has earned high acclaim both in Japan and abroad.
Since its founding in 2019, KHOKI has earned recognition both in Japan and internationally, including winning the TOKYO FASHION AWARD 2023, being selected as a semifinalist for the LVMH Prize 2024, and being named one of the 10 Asian Designers to Watch 2025. This year, the brand returns to the runway for the first time in a year and a half during Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO S/S 2027, as part of by R, Rakuten's brand support project. We spoke with director Koki Abe about KHOKI's philosophy of craftsmanship and its vision for the future.
It all began when we were still working at different fashion brands. After work, we’d get together at my place in Shimokitazawa, where I was living at the time. Each of us shared a desire to create something more personal, so we spent our free time making what we loved. Those sessions eventually became the foundation of KHOKI.
At first, each member freely created what they wanted, and I, as the one who got things started, brought it all together into a single exhibition. Through that process, we gradually developed a shared creative language, which eventually evolved into what people now recognize as "KHOKI-ness."
Another major influence is my own background. I grew up in the countryside of Yamanashi, in a distinctive town settled by Americans. Within a traditional Japanese landscape, there were ranches, churches, and traces of American folk culture. Growing up surrounded by handcrafted American quilts and folk art left a lasting impression on me, and that experience continues to shape KHOKI's approach to craftsmanship and creative expression today.
We don't believe a brand is created by a single designer. It's shaped by everyone involved in bringing a garment to the customer. At KHOKI, production management, pattern making, sales, and PR are all part of the creative process. Even as director, I'm simply one member of that circle.
Honestly, we rarely look back at what we've accomplished. New ideas keep coming, so our focus naturally shifts toward the next creation rather than past achievements or recognition. Of course, we're grateful that people appreciate our work. But as director, I'm always thinking about where to steer this ship next and what new landscape we can explore. The rest of the team feels the same way. By the time one creation is finished, we're already immersed in the next.
Since we work as a team, what matters most to us is our attitude. No matter the genre, it's about how much feeling you can put into making something. It's important that everyone shares that commitment with the same level of passion.
Our company is called KHOKI Design Office, and our philosophy is very simple: "to excite people through creation." That idea is what we value above all.
To us, good design is always about moving forward. Reproducing old things exactly as they were isn't part of our aesthetic. While paying respect to the history and the techniques, we're always thinking about how to update them for the present.
These days, design itself can be imitated by anyone. That's exactly why, to hold value over the long term, you need a level of technical skill others can't reach. By continually refining our techniques together with our artisans, we hope to develop expressions that are truly one of a kind.
The signatures are the patchwork and hand-embroidered items we've kept making since the beginning. For example, this military jacket was inspired by the checked piping on an old bedsheet we found at a flea market. We translate the warmth found in old objects into contemporary clothing.
In the early days we used a lot of vintage fabric, but through the accumulated skill and the trial and error of the artisans we've kept working with, we've become able to create expressions that rival vintage even with new fabrics.
We'd recommend our signature Tuck Pleats Pants. Every member of the team wears them. Rather than relying on conventional construction lines, they explore new silhouettes through pleats placed at the hem. Like our embroidery, they've been refined continuously since the brand's early days.
The embroidered pieces tend to stand out visually, but these pants are actually what our team members wear most often. Pairing casual tops with what we call "dress" pants is very much the KHOKI way of dressing.
The starting point is often old reference material. Sometimes we look at quite niche sources, like a specialist book compiling saddle bags used in Iranian villages. From material like that, we search for something that feels like "This would be interesting as clothing today," or "I'd want to wear this."
That vision is then entrusted to artisans in India, Vietnam, Japan, and elsewhere. Rather than giving detailed instructions, we simply provide the reference materials and let them interpret them. That often leads to expressions we could never have imagined ourselves.
As the interpretations of artisans from different cultures are added, it transforms into embroidery we've never seen before. That process itself is what we find fascinating.
Lately, we've increasingly chosen not to set a clear seasonal theme. Rather than ending things with a single theme, we build the skills we've cultivated into the next season. That accumulation itself, we believe, connects to respect for tradition and culture.
For KHOKI, a runway show is pure fantasy. We want it to become an unforgettable night, and the entire team shares that ambition. That's why we don't do one every season. We only present a show when we genuinely feel inspired to express something and bring joy to people. Once it becomes an obligation, things inevitably start to feel forced.
Working with Rakuten, we felt that a new form of expression would emerge that we couldn't achieve on our own. We thought their support would open up new possibilities for KHOKI.
It also happened to coincide with the moment we felt ready to return to the runway after a year and a half. To be honest, we hadn't planned to stage a solo show this year, but by R gave us the opportunity to challenge ourselves in a different way.
We hope it becomes an opportunity for people who haven't yet discovered KHOKI before to get to know the brand. Until now, we have focused on building relationships with people who resonate with our approach to creation. Through a runway show, we'd love for a wider audience to experience the world of KHOKI that only a show can convey.
For Spring/Summer 2027, we've continued the approach we began last season, of intentionally avoiding a large seasonal theme. Instead, we're deepening the expressions we've built over the years.
For example, we're evolving embroidery from decorative patterns into three-dimensional techniques similar to smocking. Even within the same craft, we're exploring entirely new ways of expressing it.
At the same time, we believe a runway show needs a theme. We develop the show and the collection separately, then discover the common language between them and bring everything together into one final expression.
It's important for us to bring our approach to creation to more people. There really are things that only come across once you hold the piece in your hands. We hope people can experience everything from how we select materials, develop our original patterns, and approach each detail, to the stories and handwork behind each piece.Through that experience, we hope they'll take an interest in the ideas and stories behind our creations.
For the first release, we're making a shirt, a T-shirt, and a tote bag, which we'd like to offer as KHOKI's approachable entry items. Later on, we'd like to make the runway pieces from this show available to order as well. Because it's part of by R, we want to create a project that lets people experience not only the collection but also the show's more expressive creations through exclusive items.
Our international business has continued to grow. We now have around 40 stockists abroad, about the same as in Japan. When we started, it was centered on China, South Korea, and so on, but lately it's been spreading to the United States as well. We'd like to continue expanding internationally, but not simply by holding trade shows—we'd rather create something that's uniquely KHOKI.
Another goal is to share not only our clothes, but the spaces we create. We hope to build a place where people can experience the atmosphere of KHOKI as a whole. Opening our own store may become one of our future challenges.
It's our first runway show in a year and a half, so the entire team, myself included, is genuinely excited. We believe this excitement is a very positive energy for the creative process. We're confident it will be a wonderful show, and we hope everyone looks forward to experiencing it.
